Dutch News

2 April 2014

Over the last days the Dutch media and social media are full of reactions and analyses about the 'less Moroccans' election speech of Wilders and the early release of the owners of a jewellery store after they killed two Dutch Moroccan youngsters during a robbery. The slumbering dissatisfaction about, and of, young Dutch Moroccans has increased so much that experts fear that there is a serious danger that the situation will explode.  Should the Dutch be afraid for an eruption of violence? It is time to step out of the moral swamp and start a debate, otherwise society will keep on feeding right wing populists.

After the local elections speech of Geert Wilders, when he asked his followers if they want more or less Moroccans, the Netherlands is outraged. On one side thousands of citizens went to the police to report a discrimination complaint, while on the other side the Wilders asked the Dutch to file complaints against discriminatory statements about Dutch Moroccans by social democrat leaders.

When two apparently Dutch Moroccan youngsters were killed during a robbery of a jewellery store more than a week ago, and the public prosecutor stated that there will probably be no prosecution of the shop owners, the outrage only got more intense. Many saw the ingrained prejudices confirmed, on the other hand even a few Dutch Moroccan youngsters demonstrated against the fact that the killers of their friends might not be persecuted at all.

Over the last days the Dutch media and social media are full of reactions and analyses. Newspaper Trouw concludes that 'Moroccan' became a term of abuse  in the Netherlands. Through these latest developments the slumbering dissatisfaction about young Dutch Moroccans has increased so much that expert fear that there is a serious danger that the situation will explode. The journalist asks himself: 'should the Dutch be afraid for an eruption of violence?' Because of the crisis it is even more difficult for young Dutch Moroccans to find work, and after the latest naming and shaming they end up in an even more futureless situation.

Weekly the Groene Amsterdammer pays attention to the creeping process of racism, after many years of repetitive stereotyping of ethnic groups. 'Through this a sort of moral swamp came into being and now nobody knows anymore what can be said and what cannot be said, or what the difference is between facts and nonsense.' The articles concludes that the political framing of Geert Wilders by attacking and insulting the Islam and in this case Dutch Moroccans, is taken over by everybody else. Slowly but surely stereo types become accepted and the effect of statements that stir up hatred is not that the accused become fulfilled with hating themselves, but that others start to think more negatively about them and in the end start discriminating.

The Groene Amsterdammer articles concludes with an advice for the Dutch system and public: It is time to step out of the moral swamp. Stop suppressing the debate about the multicultural society, about Islam and about the large percentage of Dutch Moroccan youngsters that ends up in criminality. If that happens again, the society will keep on feeding right wing populists.
