Anatomic theatre Leiden revived

Next week the renovated anatomic theatre in the Boerhaave Museum in Leiden will be opened. In the anatomic theatre, that is famous from the Rembrandt painting The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp, the techniques, instruments and preparation will be shown with digital projections and 3D movies.  The Leiden University medical faculty was famous in 17th-century Europe. Students came from all over Europe to sit at the feet of well-known medical teachers.

The museum is located in a building that was originally a convent in central Leiden. It includes a reconstructed traditional anatomical theatre. It also has many galleries that include the apparatus with which Heike Kamerlingh Onnes first liquefied helium (in Leiden), the electromagnet equipment used by Wander Johannes de Haas (a Leiden physicist) for his low-temperature research, and an example of the Leiden jar, among many other objects in the extensive collection.

The museum is named after Herman Boerhaave, a Dutch physician and botanist who was famous in Europe for his teaching at Leiden and lived to a great age, receiving brilliant students from all over Europe, including Peter the Great, Voltaire and Linnaeus.

The Leiden University medical faculty was famous in 17th-century Europe. Students came from all over Europe to sit at the feet of the well-known medical teachers Peter Paauw, Jan van Horne and Franciscus dele Boë Sylvius. Not only the lecture hall, but also the anatomical theatre as well as the hospital were important sites for medical instruction. The Dutch hands-on approach was unique and served as an example for the teaching courses of many early modern centres of medical education.
