Algae refinery opened in Lelystad

Micro-algae are seen as one of the most promising raw materials for the sustainable production of ingredients for food, animal feed, chemicals and bio based materials. The introduction of VALORIE, the first mobile algae refinery factory, in Lelystad in the Netherlands, represents an important step in the commercialisation of algae, which may enable algae to be produced on a larger scale.

ACRRES and Algae Food & Fuel have joined forces in Lelystad to work on cultivating and increasing the value of algae. In 2012, two algae ponds (250 m2 and 125 cm deep) and three photo-bioreactors were realised on the ACRRES site. The first mobile algae refinery pilot factory has now been realised by Algae Food & Fuel and TNO as a means of increasing the value of algae via bio refinery. VALORIE stands for Versatile Algae On-site Raw Ingredient Extractor. This brand new, state-of-the-art pilot factory is located on the ACRRES site, which is part of Wageningen UR, in Lelystad.

Van Diem, the director of Algae Food and Fuel states that Algae is one of the most beautiful plants in the world. 'There are 80.000 different varieties, and for many products we are producing today one of the varieties will be able to supply the raw materials. The algae for example produce proteins and if it will be produced on a large scale there will be less need for animal proteins. It is definitely the raw material of the future.'
