Dutch commemorate victims MH17 disaster in Amsterdam

Today, at 13.00 hours, the Dutch MH17 National Remembrance Ceremony will take place at the RAI trade and event centre in Amsterdam. Attendance is by invitation only and is only for friends and family of the victims and those directly affected by the disaster.

The ceremony is a token of sympathy for the victims’ next of kin and an expression of respect for the victims themselves. It gives friends and family the opportunity to come together with others who have been bereaved and remember their loved ones. The programme for the ceremony has been devised in close consultation with next of kin. During the ceremony, 30 friends and family will read out the names of all 298 victims. Four will deliver a personal speech or read a poem. Prime Minister Mark Rutte will speak on behalf of the government. A minute’s silence will also be held.

The Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, the Netherlands Radio Choir and the Netherlands Children’s Choir will provide music, alongside Dutch artists Marco Borsato, Lenette van Dongen, Douwe Bob and Glennis Grace. Former television presenter Maartje van Weegen will be the master of ceremonies.

Their Majesties King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima will attend, as will Their Royal Highnesses Princess Beatrix and Princess Margriet of the Netherlands, accompanied by Professor Pieter van Vollenhoven. Several members of the government, MPs, foreign ambassadors, mayors of victims’ municipalities and other dignitaries will also attend.

The official ceremony will begin at 13.00 and will last until approximately 14.15. Following this, there will be a more informal gathering which will end at around 16.30. Dutch broadcaster NOS will broadcast the ceremony live on radio and television.
