Use of DNA in criminal cases |
![]() |
Soon the Swiss parliament will discuss new legislation to make more use of DNA traces in criminal cases. The Netherlands already has less strict rules for the use of DNA material and for DNA research amongst the population. The rape and murder of Marianne Vaatstra played a large role in the broadening of the Dutch DNA legislation. After a large DNA research in the Dutch province Friesland, the perpetrator was eventually found. At the same time more research is done in the European Union to predict even more precise detailed characteristics from a DNA trace. Professor Manfred Kayser explains the latest results of the EU DNA research Visage. Critic Victor Toom gives his views on the new developments and DNA specialist of the police in Friesland and the father Bauke Vaatstra explain how important the new legalisation was to solve the dreadful crime on Marianne Vaatstra.
Activities: research, set-up, planning, accompany filming, interview, organise extra video footage Vaatstra case.
